Solutions For Chewing

When you have chewer on your hands, it seems like the phone charging cables are always the first casualty. The best solution in our house has been switching to the nylon braided cords like the ones below. They are much more durable than regular cords.

Type C:

Micro USB:

For non-USB cords, there are cord protectors like the 2 below. They can be cut to the length you need and they wrap around the cord with a split seam. These are really helpful as you can use them with just about any type of cord.

Rubber Tubing:

Plastic Tubing:

We have a chewer and I give him silvervine sticks and turkey tendons to gnaw on. All of the cats love these, which makes it a nice treat, and it gives my chewer an appropriate outlet for his chewing habit.

Turkey Tendons:

Silvervine Sticks:

Be sure to keep an eye on playtime with the silvervine sticks. When it starts to fray, throw it out and replace it with a new stick.

I caution against getting rubber or silicone chew toys because, as they chew on it, pieces will break off. These pieces will not soften or digest at all and can cause a bowel obstruction, which can be lethal.

Most cats don't like the smell of citrus. I love this orange spray to keep cats away from certain things but it does need to be reapplied daily. It's perfectly safe for cats, they just don't like the smell. It is safe to use on most furniture so you can spray it around areas with cords, such as end tables or TV cabinets.

Angry Orange Spray:

Refill Concentrate:

You can also use a bitter spray on the items being chewed. It's completely safe, it just tastes bad. This is best suited for items that you aren't touching often, like the cords behind the TV or the bottom of the curtains. If it's something you use a lot, it will get on your hands too, which makes this my least favorite option.

Bitter Spray:

If your cat only chews on something in a very specific area, there are motion activated deterrents that you can place near the problem area like this:
