Kitten Season ~ Fostering 13 MORE Cats!
There are several videos at the bottom of this post.
We still have litter #8, Cheri and Tanner, but the shelter is very full so we went to pick up another litter today. There were a dozen cages full of kittens that could really use a foster home. It is so heart breaking. I took the camera with me to take you on a little tour of the back room so you can see what it's like. So you can see the over whelming need for foster families. Maria was kind enough to let me take some video while we decided which litter to take. (Thanks Maria!)
We needed to take Cheri and Tanner in for de-wormer medicine. They don't show any signs of having worms; this is just SOP with all shelter animals to make sure they stay healthy. Today is the perfect example of why Missi isn't allowed to go to the shelter. I take two cats in for a check up and I come home with 13 extra cats. Yes, 13!
We knew we were going to take another litter because the shelter really needs help. But we thought we'd take a motherless litter or a mom with maybe 4 kittens... Welllllll... At the first cage we found a mama and 8 kittens crammed together. Maria explained that she's trying to get them moved to one of the bigger cages in the front lobby so they can have more room. But, like I said, the shelter is full. We figured we would take this litter but continued to look at the other cages. Maria showed us a litter of four tiny kittens that didn't have a mama and they couldn't eat solid food yet so they would need to be hand fed for a while. Also, their time was almost up.
It was a difficult decision but we knew what we needed to do. John and I were in absolute agreement that the litter of 9 needed a foster to get them out of that little cage and that we couldn't leave those 4 babies there to be euthanized. We were leaving with 13 more cats. Adding Cheri, Tanner and our 5 boys, we now have 20 cats in the house!
Be sure to check out all of our videos from today's visit to the shelter, 5/11/16. We have a tour of the back room at the shelter and 2 Kitten UnBoxing's for Litters #9 & #10. There are tips in these videos about how to get a mama cat to 'accept' or 'adopt' another litter and be their surrogate mother.
*Note: Litter #9 is Twinkles litter.
